Military Medal GVI grp POW Escaper 2/Cameronians

A fine escaper’s MM group to Rfn John Wallace of the, 2nd Btn Cameronians. Rfn Wallace was captured on 18th March 1944 on the Anzio front. He escaped in June 1944 eventually linking up with allies a month later. It appears on liberation Rfn. Wallace was subsequently posted to the Royal Engineers as his London Gazette entry on 26th July 1945 details him as a Sapper, Corps Royal Engineers and the MM is named RE. However the WO 373 recommendation as well his escaper’s card show him as 2nd Btn Cameronians.
Military Medal recommendation reads:
14621181 Rfn. Wallace, John 2 Bn Cameronians, 5 Div
Captured on 18th Mar 44 during the fighting on the ANZIO front, WALLACE was imprisoned at Laterina (Camp 82).
During Jun 44 when the camp was being evacuated by the retreating Germans, WALLACE hid for 4½ hours beneath a bed. Although he become cramped because of the restricted space, he did not move, and in spite of the Germans’ rigorous searches he was not discovered. After negotiating several wire fences, he bluffed his way past two German sentries swan a river and made his way south and, with other escapers, met a South African unit on 4 Jul 44 near AREZZO.
This was a fine solo escape by a private soldier.
