Lieutenant Gordon Frank Chissell was a pre-war public schoolboy who volunteered shortly after the outbreak of war. He joined the 20th (3rd Public Schools) Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. After training in England he landed in France on 14th November 1915. Having served on the Western Front for several months Private Chissell was granted a commission with the Machine Gun Corps, becoming a 2/Lt on 26th September 1916. He then commanded a 2 gun section of Vickers machine guns during the battles of the Somme in 1916 and Passchendaele in 1917.

Promoted Lieutenant on 26th March 1918 he remained in the frontline throughout 1918 and was still serving in the MGC is January 1920.
